Making All Voices Count (MAVC) is a global initiative that supports innovation, scaling-up, and research to deepen existing innovations and help harness new technologies to enable citizen engagement and government responsiveness. This Grand Challenge focuses global attention on creative and cutting-edge solutions, including those that use mobile and web technology, to ensure the voices of all citizens are heard and that governments have the capacity, as well as the incentive, to listen and respond.
MAVC brings together the U.K Department for International Development (DFID), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), Open Society Foundations (OSF) and Omidyar Network (ON) to create a USD 47 million fund to support innovation, scaling-up, and research that will deepen existing innovations and help harness new technologies to enable citizen engagement and government responsiveness. MAVC is implemented by a consortium consisting of Ushahidi, Hivos and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS).
The aim of Making All Voices Count is a substantial push towards effective democratic governance and accountability. We believe that open government depends on closing the feedback loop between citizens and government.
On September 23rd 2013 during an event on Supporting Civil Society on the sidelines of the 68th United Nations General Assembly the WhiteHouse opened the MAVC application process. Following that high level event MAVC is hosting launch events around the world. Last week we opened for business with a launch at iSpace in Accra, this week it’s the turn of South Africa and Kenya with the Indonesia launch at a later stage.
